2022 Competition Guidelines

2022 ALICE FRAZIER KITCHEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

Competition format:

           TBD based on safety and health guidelines . . Please be advised that simultaneous live recording of the contestants is required. Said recording is subject to submission to the Competition co-chairs in the event of any unpredictable Wi-Fi and/or Zoom technical issues arising during the live performance.  In order to enhance the sound quality, it is highly recommended (but not required) that an external microphone (instead of the builtin-in one) be utilized. As in the past, this is an open competition all contestants, their parents and teachers are invited to watch via Zoom.

          Detailed instructions will be provided to the contestants upon registration.

2022 Alice Kitchen Competition Application

  Postmark deadline for registration check and proof of age document is March 14 , 2022. Please mail entry fee check (made payable to MTAC-WLA) and proof of age to competition co-chair Louisa Wong at 124 S. Kenter Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90049

Competition schedule will be emailed to all participating teachers by March 15, 2022.
Winnersrecital will be held the same format as the Competition.

The Alice Frazier Kitchen Scholarship Competition is open to students of active teacher members of MTAC-WLA. The competition is geared toward the most deserving students of all instruments. Teachers may enter up to a total of three students.

Category 1: age 10 & under. Entry fee: $45. Prizes: 1st place: $100. 2nd place: $50.

Category 2: age 13 & under. Entry fee: $50. Prizes: 1st place: $150. 2nd place: $100.

Category 3: age 15 & under. Entry fee: $55. Prizes: 1st place: $200. 2nd place: $150.

Category 4: age 18 & under & pre-college. Entry fee: $60. Prizes: 1st place: $300.

2nd place: $200

Honorable mention will be awarded at the discretion of judges.


* To enter in a category, a student must be the above mentioned age or younger on the date of competition March 20, 2022.

Entry fees are NON-REFUNDABLE. Late application is subject to a late fee of $15 and upon approval from the co-chairs.

At the discretion of judges, ties may be awarded. In the event of a tie, scholarship award amounts may be redistributed within the Category.
 
Entrants from Category 1 & 2 must present a recital program of at least two works (up to three works); entrants from Category 3 & 4 must present a recital program of  three works (single movements of longer works are acceptable). Pieces chosen need to be from contrasting historical periods: Medieval/Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, Contemporary.

Maximum duration of competing time for each category is limited to:
Category 1: 8 minutes     Category 2: 10 minutes     Category 3: 13 minutes

Category 4: 15 minutes

All music must be memorized for piano and voice students. Memorization for wind students is optional. Memorization for string students must follow the MTAC Certificate of Merit syllabus requirements for Panel auditions.


Previous 1st-place winners of a category are not eligible to enter the same or any lower category. However, they may enter a higher category.

Decisions of the judges are final. Judges are not obligated to select a winner in each category.

In the event of any dispute, claim, question, or disagreement arising from or relating to the terms and conditions of this Competition or the Competition Agreement, or the breach thereof, MTAC-WLA shall use its best effort to settle the dispute, claim, question, or disagreement. To this effect, they shall consult and negotiate with each other in good faith, and recognizing their mutual interests, attempt to reach a just and equitable solution satisfactory to both parties. If they do not reach such solution within a period of sixty (60) days, then upon notice by either party to the other, all disputes, claims, questions, or differences shall be finally settled by arbitration administered by the American Arbitration Association in accordance with the provisions of its Commercial Arbitration Rules.
