Steps to Becoming a member of MTAC West Los Angeles Branch
Teachers who wish to join MTAC-West Los Angeles must first become a member of the State organization, Music Teachers’ Association of California. Five categories of membership (Active, Provisional, Student, Cal Plan, and Business Affiliate) are detailed below along with all the requirements of each category.

Once your application for active membership has been accepted by State, you can become a member of our West Los Angeles branch by contacting our Vice President of Membership, Victoria Roizen

Active Membership

Active Membership is the highest level of membership and is required to participate in State programs such as Certificate of Merit and to be listed in the MTAC Annual Directory. Requirements can be found on the state website:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music from an accredited college, university or conservatory (or the equivalent)
  • Degrees obtained outside the U.S. require an equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree in music, documented with a Foreign Credential Evaluation Report (FCER). Applicants must apply with the “Foreign Diploma Active Membership Application”
  • A degree emphasis or four years of individual study at a college level in the desired Primary Instrument or Subject
  • Two years teaching experience in the Primary Instrument or Subject
  • Compliance with MTAC Bylaws

Deadline for Active Membership applications: July 31. To be eligible for participation in State Programs (not including CM), new membership applications must be completed by October 15.

Provisional

Provisional Membership is a four-year program for those who have not yet fulfilled all the requirements of Active Teacher Membership. Provisional Members enjoy most privileges of Active Membership, including participation in Certificate of Merit, and achieve Active Membership by earning points through documenting instruction and experience.
Deadline for Provisional Membership Applications: July 31.
To be eligible for participation in State Programs (not including CM), new membership applications must be completed by October 15

Student

Student Membership is for undergraduate students who are currently working on a bachelor’s degree in music. Student Membership is limited to four years. Active Membership is achieved upon completion and verification of a bachelor’s degree in music.

Requirements: Enrollment in two or more music courses per academic year
Deadline for Student Membership applications: July 31.
To be eligible for participation in State Programs (not including CM), new membership applications must be completed by October 15

Cal Plan

Cal Plan Membership is a four-year independent study program for teachers without academic training who are pursuing Active Membership. Cal Plan Members enjoy most privileges of Active Membership, including eligibility for participation in Certificate of Merit. Additional information on the program is available on the Cal Plan page.

Business Affiliate

Business Affiliate Membership is available to non-teaching persons or firms interested in the purposes of the organization. Business Affiliate members also enjoy the privilege of receiving a full searchable listing in our Member Directory on the homepage. Members can submit a full listing with at least one main image, a business description, addresses, contact information, as well as, their website and email links.
